Technology Journalism
What is Technology Journalism?
Understanding today's high-technology world requires engineers and
scientists to keep up with not only their own fast-moving fields,
but developments in related and even unrelated fields. Development
of a new drug, for example, doesn't just take medical science with
a little biochemistry anymore. Genomics, proteomics, physics, computer
science, and robotics all take a hand in moving from a need to a
product. The designer of a new aircraft has to deal not only with
aerodynamics and propulsion, but electronics, electromechanics,
electro-optics, networking, computer programming, and so forth.
These engineers look to technology journalists like C.G. Masi to
guide them through the maze. Technology journalists show them not
only what is new in their own fields, but how those developments
relate to developments in other fields.
To provide this guidance, journalists covering high-technology
need a background that is not only deep, but wide. They have to
have a good understanding of the scientific foundations on which
technology grows, as well as an understanding of the interrelated
web of products and activities that combine to make the whole we
call "high-technology."
In addition, they need the communication skills to interview specialists
who develop new technology about their work, and then describe that
work in clear, concise language to readers who are not specialists
in the same fields.
These are the skills that C.G. Masi has developed during his 20+
years of covering high technology for various technical trade publications.
